The image is historical. The relationship is present.

The photographs held across this site show Sudan in 1936: life along the Nile, people gathering, moving, and making a world together. Today, that same spirit of collective care is sustaining communities through an immense humanitarian crisis.

These photographs are not offered as nostalgia. They are records of a living people: of place, kinship, labour, and the everyday forms of relation that hold a society together. Nearly ninety years later, Sudanese communities are drawing on that same relational strength to care for one another.

Giving is one way of remaining in relationship across distance. It is an acknowledgement that none of us becomes whole alone, and that a holding container can be material as well as emotional: a communal kitchen, safe passage, medicine, water, or shelter.

Nafeer

An Arabic word for collective action — a longstanding Sudanese practice of people coming together to meet a shared need.

About the organisation

Mutual Aid Sudan Coalition

Mutual Aid Sudan Coalition connects global supporters directly with Sudan's Emergency Response Rooms.

Emergency Response Rooms are community-led networks of Sudanese volunteers providing life-saving support where conventional aid systems often cannot reach. Rooted in neighbourhoods and trusted by the people they serve, they organise communal kitchens, healthcare, evacuations, shelter, water, and protection.

The coalition exists to move resources directly to these local responders. Funds are managed by Proximity2Humanity, a nonprofit founded by experienced humanitarians with deep relationships in Sudan.
